Description

It is a dark and cold place here on the bottom of the Chicago municipal map. There is little to love, and that which can be loved has little to do with the area itself. The sky is one such thing. There are times when the sun flares to the west, setting. Clouds will often roll in from the east, from the lake, like strange and sooty turbulence. When the sun is just low enough and the clouds are just high enough…when there is enough pollution held in suspension, the sunlight and cloud combination strikes the eye in the most amazing ways. As I walked home, I caught a glimpse of the sky between viaducts. Traffic thundered overhead, and high-voltage lines snapped and crackled like emitters of some strange and invisible radiation. I love that sound, and I remember hearing it as a child, when leaves fell onto charged wires, when charged wires seemed to snap and crackle of their own accord. Birds know to avoid these high-tension/high-voltage lines…and the sky above will occasionally blossom into the strangest of artistic canvases. I have little love for the far south of this city, but on occasion, I glimpse something that makes life here a bit more tolerable. This image is a record of one such moment. As always, thank you for viewing, reading, and commenting, and hopefully everyone is having a great week.

The photograph is striking alone, but your words breathe 200% more into the experience of looking at it!

Oh, I missed this one Chip. What a striking sky. We stayed in a motel on Hwy 55 west-southwest of the Loop about 15-20 minutes. South side is a tough place I hear.

The sunsets get like this here in early January and deepest winter. The ice crystals suspended in the air scatter the light in much the same way. I get chills just looking at this scene. Deep luminous red in the darkness always means cold to me more than any shade of blue.

WOW!! This totally ROCKS! I LOVE this image! There's so much depth and gradiations of color that you could almost live in it. And the sheer moodiness of the photo gives me chills. Your words nicely capture the drab-dingy lifelessness of the South Side ( that in the last two months I've become strongly aware of )and the desire to leave. This is a fantastic shot and one of my new favorites!
