Description

After the incandescent fury of the aerobraking maneuver in the outer layers of Jupiter's atmosphere, Leonov begins its long arcing climb toward a rendezvous with the moon Io, and Discovery, in a decaying orbit around Io. The faithful heatshield has done its job, and is jettisoned. One of the most fun images of the series, with a lot of displacement mapping and texture work on the ablated shield. Modeled and rendered in Lightwave 8.5. Base Jupiter cloud texture from NASA/JPL. Thanks for having a look! -Tom

Nicely done. I like this Leonov better than the clunky one in the film, even if that one was a Syd Mead design. (Remember there is also the doomed Chinese expedition who actually DID land on that soon-to-be-forbidden moon.)

Great charring and detail on the heatshield. And the released lines too! And great ship, as always.

This is my fave of the series to date. You just really nailed the composition and light here, Tom. If any were to be made into a print, this would be my pick so far. Your subtle IR glow on the heat shield is perfect and the flailing shroud lines add the perfect sense of dynamism to the scene. The limb of Jupiter is beautiful - wonderful color and detail. And is that a moon just starting to peek over the horizon? This one's a real beaut, bud!
