Description
York Mill built in 1880
Sgt. Alvin C. York State Historic Park is a state park in Pall Mall, in the U.S. state of Tennessee. Situated along the Wolf River, the park contains the farm and gristmill once owned by decorated World War I soldier Alvin C. York (1887-1964), who lived in the Pall Mall area for most of his life. Along with the millhouse and milldam, the park includes York's two-story house, York's general store and post office, the Wolf River Cemetery (where York and his family are buried), the Wolf River Methodist Church, the York Bible Institute, an M247 Sergeant York tank, and various picnic facilities.
Alvin York is one of the most celebrated soldiers in American history. He joined the pacifist Church of Christ in Christian Union in 1914, and when drafted for service in World War I in 1917, he applied for conscientious objector status, but was denied. On October 8, 1918, while on patrol along the Meuse-Argonne Front in France, York and his platoon wandered behind enemy lines and were caught in an ambush that left over half the platoon dead. York then led the handful of survivors in a counterattack that resulted in the capture of 132 German soldiers. York was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor and became an instant celebrity, and upon his return to the United States he was barraged with offers for endorsements (both commercial and political), movies, and books, most of which he initially rejected, believing it was wrong to profit from an act of war. The Nashville Rotary Club raised the funds to buy York his Pall Mall farm, which it presented to York in 1922. After York's death, his widow sold the farm to the state of Tennessee.
Located on U.S. Highway 127,in Pall Mall, TN, quite a fun drive, I found an old car graveyard there, and have posted a couple pictures of that in my gallery I will post another one tomorrow there is also an old General store built in the early 1900's with an original soda fountain any many other treasures out on this highway If you are ever out that way. It is also the area where they hold a yard sale which has been called the Worlds largest yard sale, starting in Alabama, it runs through Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky and ends in Ohio. Below is some information on that.
Travel more than 650-miles of scenic beauty and see tons of yard sales. Get started on your journey by traveling the 93- mile Lookout Mountain Parkway route from Gadsden, Alabama to Chattanooga, Tennessee for the most "scenic rural America" in the United States. Alabama has more than 1,000 yard sale vendors alone! You will find everything from antiques, collectibles, furniture, dishware's, fresh garden produce, homemade jams and jellies, food vendors, live entertainment and so much more. Continue with the yard sale, following the U.S. 127 Corridor from Chattanooga, TN to West Unity, OH for another 550 miles of yard sale bargains. When combined, the Lookout Mountain Parkway and the 127 Corridor have had as many as 5,000 vendors lined along the scenic yard sale route in past.

Stellar photograph and narrative vis-a-vis Sergeant Alvin York and environs, who, incidentally, was played by Gary Cooper in the wonderful 1941 movie, Sergeant York.

This scene has a great fall mood. I expect we'll see apples and pumpkins for sale along the route. Very nice work, Lynell.

I am still staring at the "stilts" of concrete that the building is sitting on! Looks precarious, especially reflected in the water. Beautiful image, Lynell.

Wonderful presentation on Sgt. York. I didn't know he was a pacifist, how interesting. This is a beautiful shot with a wonderful POV. I love the lighting and the beautiful mature trees. I feel like sitting at your vantage point and painting this scene. Oh, I don't have to. I just have to add this to my favorites gallery!!! Lucky me!

You have my support..my wife and sisters tried the longest yard sale once but not this time.. I am very glad to see this pic, even with the detail enhancement which works for your photo. A bunch of history is here, history to be known and remembered for those who were. Thanks. Tom.

I've watched the old movie, Sergeant York, starring Gary Cooper numerous times. Your photo shows this countryside to be still beautiful and practically untouched...the way I like it.
