Description

These homeless migrants are behind the monument to Emanuele Filiberto Duke of Aosta, chief commander of the III Army (1869/1931). It is at Piazza Castello, behind Palazzo Madama, facing Via Po in Turin, Italy. The idea of promoting the erection of a monument to the Duke of Aosta at Turin during the early Thirties did not come from the House of Savoy as may be expected but from the Italian Army. The venture was alternately praised and criticised for its strong political connotation to the point of turning the idea of dedicating a monument to fallen heroes into glory for a leader and his combatants. The idea of representing the sacrifice of lives during a war to make remembrance eternal was replaced by the image of a hierarchy and general call-up in view of a possible armed conflict. Thank you for your kind comments.

even the fallen should not be forgotten.... go forth and do the bidding of your Lord, your king, your church... die well, die bravely.... such fally is man's frailty.....there's this old Polish proverb... "if you have three sons... give one to the army, give one to the church.... and keep one ofr yourself.... stark and startling image... beautiful!

You've really added a modern dimension to an old monument that caused its' own share of discontent in its' day. Like the way you blended these photos together. Has to sit and stare at this for awhile.

Ok Sandra, now you are just showing off! ;-) Stunning collage, very well done. We have many homeless in my country who are military veterans so this has special meaning.
