Description

Very rare North American O-47B. Built 1939. Original purpose was for observation and photo reconaissance. Several folks asked to see the whole plane...these photos just miss the tail. The dull finish is oxidized aluminum. It would shine with the best of them if a lot of elbow grease and polish was applied. Crew of three, one pilot and two observers. All three sat one behind the other in this very long cockpit. Windows below the observers enabled them to look and photograph down without the wings getting in the way. See some of these windows below the wings. Only three of the "B" variant are known to remain and this is one of those three. A fourth is being restored from wreckage found in Florida. Some 174 of the "A" version were built, only 74 of the "B" version were built. Although the aircraft was acceptably designed, slow speed (200 mph) made it too dangerous to use around threat of anti-aircraft fire. Original cost was $38,000. Alternate uses for the O-47 became anti-submarine patroling and towing targets. Please ZOOM for best view. Bill:) Click here: Details for those who want them. You know who you are:-)

Great info Bill, looks very much like a stretched North American T-6 Texan (Harvard). The SAAF used the Harvard for years as a trainer. Great collage, Clive

It looks like a dumpy little insect! Your composition skills are so good that I find myself engaged by the photos even though planes aren't my 'bag'!

Interesting shots and presentation, and peek into history. Acceptably designed and beautiful, but does look like some compromises made it too heavy and too specialized.

Thanks, Bill, for the great shots and dedi! The O-47 is a fine example of a late 1930s dedicated design and despite her ungainly shape she has a beauty all her own. These did see combat service in the Philippines in 1941-42.
