Description

Sunset Crater is a volcanic cinder cone located north of Flagstaff, Arizona, within the Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument. This area is 21 miles (29km) north from the Walnut Canyon & Sinagua tribe series that I posted in early August 2009. The eruptions devastated the area and formed a 1,115 foot (340m) high cinder cone vent during the winter of 1064-1065 AD. The Sunset Crater eruption produced a blanket of ash and lapilli covering an area of more than 2100 sq km and forced the abandonment of settlements of the indigenous Sinagua Indians. The volcano has partially revegetated, with Ponderosa pines and wildflowers. In 1885, John Wesley Powell described the top of this cone “is of bright reddish cinders, while the adjacent rocks are of black basalt”. At sunset, the light, reflects on these cinders as if it were on fire – thus Sunset Crater or Sunset Peak. Tomorrow how the surrounding Wupatki Basin became the home for some major native American nations. Most information from the National Park Service. This posting scanned from a photo taken in 1996. Thanks for stopping by, taking a peak and for all your previous comments and favs. Dana

Lived in Flagstaff once, many moons ago. Nice photo!! Like the capture of how the terrain begins to break away from the dry conifer forest into a high chaparral as one travels north of Flagstaff!

Even with the violence that created this place, the heart of the earth has done a remarkable job of healing itself over the ages. It is a fertile area that welcomes the people home. Gorgeous shot.
