Description

The Wupatki National Monument is located, near Flagstaff, Arizona. The many settlement sites scattered throughout the monument were built by the Ancient Pueblo People, more specifically the Sinagua, Hopi, Cohonina, and Kayenta Anasazi. A major population influx began soon after the eruption of Sunset Crater (see my previous post) in the 11th century, which blanketed the area with volcanic ash; this improved agricultural productivity and the soil's ability to retain water. An estimated 2000 people, moved into the area during the century following the eruption. Agriculture was based mainly on corn and squash. The dwellings, the walls of many of which still stand, were constructed from flat red stones held together with mortar. Each settlement was constructed as a single building, sometimes with scores of rooms. The largest settlement on monument territory is the Wupatki Ruin, "Big House" in the Hopi language, built around a natural rock outcropping. This ruin is believed to be the area's tallest and largest structure for its time period. The monument also contains ruins identified as a ball court, similar to the courts found in Meso-America and in the Hohokam ruins of southern Arizona. This is the northernmost example of this kind of structure. This site also contains a geological blowhole. This is the Wupatki Pueblo and during the peak of occupation, in the 1100s, it was three stories high, contained almost 100 rooms and housed perhaps 200 residents. The stairs and sidewalks were built by the National Park Service, which is where most of this information came from. Scanned from a photo taken May 1996. Thanks for stopping by, taking a peak and for all your previous comments and favs. Dana

This was right down the street. Hiked around these ruins and yet I never got the chance to photograph this particular one. Oh well, you have captured it for us, nicely done.

Dana, you knew I would love this. My mind reconstructs the structure and I see the people as they go about their daily life. This really comes to life for me and the view is outstanding.

Oh this is magnificent Dana, I know its not your most recent but I had to look when I saw it! I would so love to go there, I'm told by someone who went that it has a very strong spiritual feel. Thank you for the history, I knew the Anasazi had been there but did not know of the others. I wanted to thank you for your kind comment and for sharing the dyslexia with me. I seem to be experiencing some of that too in the past couple years, inverting numbers and letters, at times I also copy and paste my comments:-) Lynn
