Description

This was taken last Sunday from one of our favorite seafood restaurants, The Original Oyster House, high up on stilts over Mobile Bay just off the Mobile Bay Causeway. As Marshall & I sat there awaiting our oysters and gumbo, we noticed this dwelling a ways off (via our zoom lens) which is really not much more than an old dilapidated shack sitting on top an old pier. Whoever lives there must make a meager living selling fresh fish, self-caught from Mobile Bay and the various connecting waterways. No doubt by any official government standards well within the poverty level. But think again. You can see that they do have electricity. And other than an occasional long lens peering at them from the restaurant down the bayou, they have privacy too. And they have (this is a big one) all the fresh fish, crawfish, and God knows what else that's harvested right from the Bay. Free of charge. They also probably have a few chickens hanging around providing fresh eggs along with some occasional Sunday afternoon Southern fried chicken as well. Self-sustaining, no Government handouts. And what sunrises and sunsets they must get to enjoy too! At night the lights from the city of Mobile (in the background) make a splendid view as well. Sure, there must be some major challenges. The Oyster House we were at just a short distance away was destroyed when Hurricane Katrina struck west of here back in 2005. But apparently this structure remained intact. Imagine that! To borrow from the wisdom of Don Williams, ". . .but I've got silver in the stars, and gold in the morning sun". Thanks for stopping by. Make it a great day!

Wonderful image. I love the way the place is tucked into the shoreline, and the blooming grasses are gorgeous!
