Description
Two hundred and twenty years ago—on June 20, 1782—the bald eagle became an American icon when the Second Continental Congress decided to use its image on The Great Seal.
The Congress had considered another bird—not the wild turkey championed by Benjamin Franklin, but a fanciful eagle inspired by the imperial eagle of the Eastern Hemisphere. In altering the earlier design, Charles Thomson, secretary of the Congress, substituted the native bald eagle suspended on spread wings, "to denote," he said, "that the United States of America ought to rely on their own Virtue."

Arete, Virtus and Gravitas, somehow not as popular as they once were. A nice capture of the eagle.

This is one of the best eagle pictures I've ever seen. I really have to say "Wow". I was just mentioning to someone the other day "Thank god Benjamin Franklin didn't get his way" A turkey could never compare to this beautiful bird. Thanks for the history, I didn't know the actual date.

This is marvelous and so dignified. As an aside note, Bald Eagles are probably making a return to the Midwestern United States. A nesting pair was discovered not too far from Chicago. It's funny how eagels of every sort, real and fanciful become aspects of heraldic images of various nations...in the Slavic world, highly stylized eagles grace numerous flags and coats of arms (even though the Polish eagle, looks a bit like a chicken, and the Russian eagle, like it's Albanian counterpart, is a mutant with two heads.) Super work. Wonderful details and colors. The words of Charles Thomson ring so incredibly true, maybe more so now than before. The United States should rely on their own virtues, but now, we're relying on something else, and it isn't always virtuous. This is a wonderful shot. It's as bold as graceful as the raptorial bird it depicts.
