Description

This is my friend Carla's house, typical example of many houses in our countryside. The ground floor was once made of a very large room with a hearthplace, which was to heat all the people working inside, and an attached scullery. Here some more rooms were built from spare rooms, where they kept stuff (preserved food mostly), and the former lavatory, now a second bathroom. On the upper floor (first or second as you like in the US and UK) there still are the bedrooms and another bathroom, as well as smaller rooms used as wardrobe, study etc. Now every house has a modern heating system, but I still remember when I went to bed in my grandparents home, and they put a brass bottle, full of very hot water, or a copper cointainer with hot ashes, to warm the beds. I still have one or two of them somewhere, and they can be sold for a good price to antiquarians. If there ever were a stable or a hen house, now they don't exist any longer. The shot was taken from under a cachi tree (Diospyros kaki, better known as the Japanese Persimmon (kaki [柿] or "shizi" [柿子] in Chinese) or Asian Persimmon in North America). These trees are very common in our countryside. I am very fond of their apple-like fruits, as my dad was. He used to peel them with painstaking attention. Flavia and my mom never ate one. So it seems that the world is divided into those who like cachi fruit and those who don't (I'm borrowing from Clint Eastwood, I think). Trevor looks a bit crestfallen because, instead of scraping his belly as he wanted me to do, I lectured him on what a sorry specimen of guard dog he is. Thank you for your kind comments.

When I first saw the thumbnail, I thought it was a green man with an orange head walking towards the house. Silly me! A most excellent photo with very interesting elements!

Lovely feel to this! Thought I recognized that fruit. The ones here in North America are to tough for anything but cookies

Lol! Poor Trevor:-) Its a beautiful place, and a lovely photo! I remember when I was a child that sometimes grandma warmed bricks and large stones to put at the foot of the bed to warm it, we lived for a time in a cabin and so had only a wood stove in the main kitchen/living room. Boy some of the food made on those old stoves was most excellent!
