Description

For an animal to be hurt in the wild often means death, sooner than later. Some are fortunate to be found and given care to heal and be returned wild to their homeland. In the meantime, strange surroundings and limited abilities create stress while healing is the goal. This Great Horned Owl wanted nothing to do with me and that is very good. The puffed up stance is defensive. I got the shot and left. The owl was injured by barbed wire, often a real threat to these hunters flying only a few feet above the ground. I do not know the extent of injury but wish for this bird to heal well. Owls make a sound with the beak, almost a clicking barking sound. This is done when they are saying, "Go away". So, I did. Color is very close to "as shot" even if it appears overly post worked but is not.

Two weeks ago, I was up near the Tremont Institute, near Cades Cove I am sure you know where that is, and saw my first owl in the wild, I was thrilled, and I got a couple photos, but no zoom lens on me so no great shots like this one to share, but an awesome memory... beautiful capture..

Wonderful shot. I hope he can heal. How sad a barbed wire fence got him. I wish those were never invented.

Those eyes makes me look nowhere else on the picture. Realy great to see an animal in its natural behaviour even if captive.
