Description

La Casa Rosada (The Pink House) also known as Casa de Gobierno (Government House) or Palacio Presidencial (Presidential Palace) is located at the eastern end of Plaza de Mayo, Buenos Aires on a site once occupied by colonial riverbank fortifications. Today it is more than a kilometer inland because of land filling. Construction begun during the presidency of Domingo Faustino Sarmiento (12 Oct 1868 to 11 Oct 1874), Argentina's 7th president. From its balcony, Juan Peron and other Argentine presidents and politicians have convened throngs of impassioned Argentines when they deemed necessary a show of public support. In 1955, naval aircraft strafed the Casa Rosada and other downtown buildings in the so-called Revolucion Libertadora, which toppled Peron. In 1995 Madonna sang her filmed rendition of the song 'Don't Cy for Me Argentina' for the movie 'Evita' from the balcony after a meeting with President Carlos Menem. The Casa Rosada is currently undergoing extensive restoration scheduled for completion on the 2010 bicentennial of the May Revolution that led to independence. This picture was taken on 25 November 2006. Thank you for viewing, commenting, and favs, Sig...
