Description

This image, known as The Last Judgement, was carved into a cave wall adjacent to the Benedictine Abbey in Brantome, France - presumably by monks in the 15th century. It is roughly 10 - 12 feet tall & depicts a god-like figure, two trumpeting angels, a figure representing death, a crowned head & several other figures. Not sure what the series of square insets above the carving (& which recur throughout the caves) were for, but I suspect they either were used to hold candles for lighting or sacred objects of some sort.

Nice photo, that's a fascinating carving, you did a nice job of capturing the details in it. I can't help but notice how they incuded only hints of the faces, presumably to avoid the "graven image" problem?

Awesome shot of an amazing work of art. I can imagine this lit by candles in the holes as you described.
