Description

The remains of a Roman aqueduct in Barbegal (just north of Arles). We were driving along & noticed a road sign that just said "Roman Aqueduct". Decided to follow it & came across several hundred feet of aqueduct ruins adjacent to an olive grove. There were no markers that we could see, but a Wikipedia article indicates that this aqueduct both fed drinking water to Arles (which the Romans originally called Arelate) & powered a large flour mill. It also quotes one reference to this complex as "the greatest known concentration of mechanical power in the ancient world". For me, aside from it's visual appeal, this is a stark reminder of the transient nature of civilizations & makes me wonder what remnants of our technology people in the year 4,000 will be pondering...

Funny how it is left out there with no protection or grass cutting or signs... I like that but I don't think we'd see that around here. Everything has money attached to it. Lovely lighting and long view.
