Description

Bananas are grown in at least 107 countries. They are not trees and what looks like a trunk is actually a Pseudostem or stock. They can grow 20 to 25 feet (6 to 7.6 meters) tall. The purple bulb, at the bottom of the stem, is sterile and called a male banana flower - also known as the banana heart. The female flowers are produced further up the stem and produce the actual fruit without requiring fertilization. The dark rings that you see on the stem are called tiers or hands and that is left when a bunch of bananas is harvested. At the top of the stem, you can see the developing green bananas. LOL at Tara--I know most of those people, they are still recovering!! All I can say about this is that these are the STRANGEST looking plants I've ever seen. I first saw them in Mexico and could hardly believe my eyes!!

Wow...I can just tell it's a male plant!! :~) Fabulous shot and beautiful plant. Does the flower open fully....would be nice to see a shot of that. Well done.
