Description

In February of 1916 the Imperial German Army launched an attack on the vital French forts surrounding the town of Verdun. The goal was to "bleed France white" in defending these strongpoints. The problem was that the Germans also bled themselves white. Added together both sides totaled 1,000,000 casualties with half of these dead in 11 months of battle. Later in 1918 American troops added soldiers to the body count along with more French and Germans. Top left: One of the three machine gun casemates "Pamard" protecting the outer perimeter of Fort de Souville. Top right: A pop-up turret for two 105mm guns on Fort Douaumont. Technically Douaumont was the strongest of the forts, but it had been stripped of some weapons and undermanned when the Germans attacked. It fell quickly in February of 1916. Bottom left: The famous French 75mm guns protrude from gun ports at the smaller Fort Vaux. Here the French garrison put up a heroic defense in June of 1916 defeating German infantry, poison gas and flamethrower attacks for a week until they ran out of water, food and ammunition. The German Crown Prince was so impressed that the French commander, Major Raynal, was allowed to keep his sword and surrender with military honors. Bottom right: The Londres(London)communication trench remains as a memorial to those who served under the worst of conditions. The average lifespan of an infantryman on the Western Front in 1916 was about 5 months.
