Description

'The autumnal change of our woods has not made a deep impression on our own literature yet. October has hardly tinged our poetry.' – wrote American writer Henry David Thoreau in 1862. '... When you come to observe faithfully the changes of each humblest plant, you find that each has, sooner or later, its peculiar autumnal tint; and if you undertake to make a complete list of the bright tints, it will be nearly as long as a catalogue of the plants in your vicinity.' Today 'leaf peeping' has given rise to niche tourim, especially in some regions of North America. Here in Italy it is new: in fact, even in the 19th century landscape painters of Italy were, most often than not, non-Italians, while our painters preferred to paint cityscapes and human landscapes, and only occasionally they painted the Romantic landscapes that made Italy famous. Much rooted here, on the contrary, is the tradition of mushrooming. Thank you for your kind comments.

I saw all of your autumn colors series go up (I look all everything even when I can't stop & comment). Your series are always a treat because you understand theme & variations, and it's great to see what pieces of history, culture & lore you will unfold as you go along. Tourism for leaf-turning in the US is more a gawking "whoa, I can't believe this!" in New England (Thoreau's old stomping ground). Because the fall colors there last for weeks, and because it's hard to believe they're as luminous as they are. Some New Englanders say they're getting tired of the whole damned thing...Even residents of other vibrant areas are stunned at how dazzling the New England fall is. What's nice about your series is that you give wholly different views, and you focus on different types of plants, different surroundings in each image. (In New England, fall's like an ocean: You have to look very closely to find the different manifestations.) I went to Walden Pond when I first got to New England, and though it was surrounded by a highway, it was pretty well left untouched. It struck me as a microcosm of all of New England: intimate forests, brooks, hills, etc. And then I read Thoreau's botanical diaries, and thought, "there's a lot of poetry here!". They're a specialist's prose, but they're still quite poetic. A lot of europeans I know don't make that big a deal about Autumn displays, but maybe it's because much of Europe has the same autumn much of the US has: It's beautiful, yes, but much more blended into the landscape than Thoreau's autumns, which were like fireworks. This series demonstrates autumn colors for the 'rest' of us (lol), each plant with its own universe. I'll comment on one more of the series today, then come back for more in the next days. (Your series are wonderful, sandra, I can't tell you how much I love watching them unfold.) The leaves here have a flat quality too, as if they all turned to your camera for the shot. Nice job all around.
