While Short Bros filled the Mail contract as a priority, and here I'll continue the shameless Classical allusions, the gathering clouds of war also saw the company turn out a fully-formed "Athena" - what the world and the steadily decreasing ranks of U-boat crews would know as the Short Sunderland, or "flying porcupine."
