Description

On the one hand you have the Christmas Star, a guiding light and symbol of love, peace and goodwill to all men. On the other, the retail giant Myer. To them, Christmas is nothing more than an exercise in commercialization. They have already had their decorations up for a while now, but on the afternoon of Christmas Eve every single trace of Christmas will be removed from their stores. Even as we speak we are bombarded by advertising telling us to buy, buy, buy, buy. The true meaning of Christmas is often lost in my opinion. I tried to capture the 'clashing' of the two cultures in this photo. Zoom, and let me know what you think!

Ah...the wonders of life in the modern age. I love the contradictions in this picture, and the fact that the building housing the store coincidentally looks like something Nicolae Ceauşescu would have built in order to force the city of Bucharest to adhere to his own nightmarish vision of what a city should be. Funny how dictators and merchants have similar views at times. As for the stars, wow...they remind me of the stars painted on the barrel-vault ceilings of some ancient Egyptian tombs--or like the secularized Christmas displays in such cities as Lubljana. Wonderful work and a rich, evocative commentary that has my mind skipping all over the globe. I love that.

Stars lined up in regimented rows, on barbed wire, in front of a building perfectly described by Chip. Well, I feel all spiritually enriched now. Excellent image! It speaks volumes!
