Evidente è il lungo becco a spatola, specializzato per setacciare le acque. Le zampe, come negli altri Ciconiformi, sono lunghe così da consentire un agile spostamento in acqua. La spatola è alta 80-90 cm, più della metà rappresentati dal corpo. L’apertura alare è di 115-130 cm. Il maschio è leggermente più grande della femmina.
