Description

Combining Mark Edwards’ (Markal) ‘Eskalon’ .ter terrain with some other elements has produced what appear to be the remnants of a volcanic cone and lava flows surrounded by a fertile landscape. The dirt and spring is high in sulphur; hence the title and yellowish tint in the soil. Thanks to Matt for the mackerel sky cloud formation file; Walli for the dry shrubs (available at NWDA) and klas for the grass. Also, thanks to John Robertson (Schmeerlap) for the procedure on building up surface layers.

A most remarkable (and memorable) view. A new twist on Markal's influential baby, that's for sure.

Nice one, Bob. That's excellent use of Matt's mackeral sky. I think the scene would benefit from you being a bit bolder with colours on the background volcanic mounds, and towers. Try applying a noisy texture image (something ochrey perhaps, he says with pouted lip and hand on hip) via Surface layer > Image map with either an X or cylindrical projection if you have the scaling large enough. You can then fade it out to taste with Coverage and Breakup. See Schmeerlap's input in the Layers of Colour thread in Planetside Forum Discussion section.

The majesty of the main formation against the mackerel sky somehow conveys a sense of change and power (don't know why, it just does). The still green forground land and water invite you to take a walk there. Excellent scale!

I knew that was Mark's terrain from the thumbnail. I think it could benefit from more color variation, but nicely presented nonetheless. Hope you had a great Thanksgiving, Bob!

The foreground is perfect and an idyll for me.... the background could in my opinion be optimized by some layers, sorry. I understand that it should be a volcanic area, but it looks so simple and trist for me !! Nevertheless an excellent work here !! You are not used to hear some kind of proposals by me.... but you know that I won't offend you, Bob... In the last years I really appreciated your fantastic works here !!!

Wow! After having to reinstall Windoze, I just reinstalled Terragen 2. That's my next project: learning to use it. With clouds like those, I'm going to be haunting you for tips and stuff! :) The rest of the image is gorgeous, too. Now off to catch up on your gallery.
