Description
Foto scattata al mattino presto nella zona tra Massaciuccoli e Migliarino Pisano, lungo il fosso che attraversa la zona .
Photo taken early morning in the area between Massaciuccoli and Migliarino Pisano, along the ditch that crosses the area.
Roman antiquities Massaciuccoli
Massaciuccoli has always gone for the famous ancient walls which emerged among his olive trees and the marble and ceramic fragments that could be found along roads and trails of the hill. In the eighteenth century was known by Italian and foreign travelers who, in addition to describing, drawing even the most distinguished of his remains, identified as thermal building after excavation in 1752 by the Count wanted Minutoli, owners of the site. Then fortune Massaciuccoli Roman suffered intermittently. Experienced moments of fame in the Duke of Bourbon (1817-47) and the early twentieth century. But digging around the "spa" and consolidation works were carried out only after 1920. These remains accurate report of prof. Antonio Minto, which was followed in 1934 the publication of Professor. Doro Levi on the discovery and demonstration of the way along Stone Marshes of an installation of a Roman villa with statues and mosaics.
The Spa
Massaciuccoli, as shown by the street called Tabula Peutingeriana, formerly called Fossae Papirianæ. Located eleven miles from Pisa, was crossed by the Via Aurelia Emilio Scauro that at the beginning of the Via del Porto, received the Cassia from Lucca via the pass of Balbo. A temple, probably dedicated to Hercules, towering over the hill where now stands the church. Residential villas surfaced among the sacred groves around the building. Towards the lake, up the road from Stone Marshes, emblazoned with the bath complex exedra of avenues, terraces, green spaces and elegant shade. Where the hill ends and the country becomes flat lies the villa of Venuleii, Roman patricians of Pisa that plays in the second century. the office of the consuls. The perimeter walls and floors of this house are visible only in part, the rest is still buried. But within Antiquarium, built by the Town of Massarosa short distance from what remains of the ancient building, you can see a series of exhibits that have concrete evidence of the vitality enjoyed by Massaciuccoli in Roman and unmistakable traces of its millennial history.
Six windows are collected stone tools found among the silica sand Montramito, and architectural fragments, everyday objects, furniture, furnishings, etc.. recalling the life of a town was inhabited by wealthy Republican and imperial lords and their servants .

This made me think of two entirely unrelated images. But first I want to say this is beautiful. The dof and POV are perfect! I love the lighting and sense of imminent motion. There is great detail, color and personality in this image. When I first saw this, I thought of a gargyole, staring down from a church wall. On a second look, it reminds me of the crazy guy at the end of "Dr Strangelove", who is riding the bomb to its final destination. Maybe it's time I went to bed. :o)
