Description

Foto scattata al mattino presto nella zona tra Massaciuccoli e Migliarino Pisano, lungo il fosso che attraversa la zona . Photo taken early morning in the area between Massaciuccoli and Migliarino Pisano, along the ditch that crosses the area. Il commento sotto si riferisce alla villa romanica di cui ho parlato nella foto precedente. The commentary below refers to the Roman villa which I mentioned in the previous photo. Mosaic floor a stone tiles, 370x434 cm. Villa dei Venuleii; II sec. d.C. The mosaic floor was part of the decoration of a Roman villa, which belonged to the family of Pisa Venuleii and unearthed in 1935 in the town Massaciuccoli on the east bank of the lake. The mosaic consists of weaving the two-toned light marble and obsidian, are entirely the area of a floor space of the house, drawing a decoration of subjects and zoomorphic phytomorphic within a double frame bands. In the central room of the floor was part of a square slab of marble, partially preserved. Restored by Opificio of semiprecious stones Florence Times restoration 1983-87 Direction of work Anna Maria Giusti Restorers Piero Frizzi Giancarlo Roddi A picture shortly after the excavation shall certify that the mosaic was intact at that time in its breadth and detail without distortion, until about thirty years ago it decided to implement the removal of the ground-laying and relocation to a new support. This intervention, for which no documentation exists, it is deducible from the situation in which the mosaic was the start of our restoration (1983) and the oral histories of those who witnessed the operation. This conduct was "ripping" the mosaic by using mechanical means, which together with the unit was reduced to series of fragments, while the tiles are incoherent, which had not been able to raise collectively, were left in place and collected in local Antiquarium. The blocks of the floor removed and freed from every remnant of the original mortar, were then applied on a thick layer of concrete and finally deposited on the area of origin, against which showed a rise of several centimeters due to the support of cement. The recent intervention Opificio has aimed to recover as much as possible the situation after the excavation, as amended does not matter from a "natural" and historically, but by an "accident" which appeared duty to mitigate its negative effects. In the reconstruction of the floor you have chosen to divide the area into two sections to reduce the weight and footprint: the suturing of two pavement sections will be implemented with a chiassolatura of tiles to be applied in situ. It took me a moment to understand the connection between the comment and the image, but I think I understand it because the insect DOES look as if it is composed of ancient tiles! WOW! I love those textures and the way nature and art work so perfectly together. This is a gorgeous image. What insect is that though? I've never seen it!

I prefer the Gargoyle staring me, but this is a great image too. This is a wonderful macro with great detail and DOF. I love mosaics. How horrible that this has been treated like that, and so recently. Interesting, but very sad information.
