Description

Antelope House is an Ancestral Anasazi Puebloan ruin located in Canyon del Muerto (a branch canyon off Canyon de Chelly). This dwelling was occupied between approximately 850 and 1270 and is believed to have contained as many as 90 rooms. The ruins are named for nearby Navajo pictographs and petroglyphs, of antelope and other animals, up on the canyon walls. Pictographs are paintings, like those famous cavemen, cave paintings. Petroglyphs are actually chipped into the rocks. I don’t have the software to pull up the actual pictograph that these ruins were named after but I put a red circle (maybe a square) around it if you want to try. Look on the canyon wall on the left side of this posting. There are about a dozen more as you move to the right. Kbrog asked why they built so high up in the cliffs. That little stream is fed from the surrounding mountains. Keep in mind that this little stream carved out these canyons. There were times when major rain storms pushed waves of water through these canyons. Also, building up high, in cracks, caves and overhangs, their homes were easier to defend. This photo was taken from the North rim of the canyon. Navajo people still live in the canyon. Note the cultivated field on the right and the water line in the lower left. There is a home next to a Hogan in another section of the canyon. Leaning over a 1,000 canyon wall was OK for a quick peek but I didn’t focus that well. Old film cameras had their drawbacks. Some info from the National Park Service, Wikipedia and Navajo people I had talked to. From a scanned 1996 photo. Thanks for stopping by, taking a peak and for all your previous comments. Dana

There are some ruins like this that still have cooking utensils in place,as though the inhabitants left in a great hurry. No one knows why---wonderful series, Dana!
