Description

This is the White House Anasazi pueblo ruins and this project was started about 1060. It was abandoned around 1275, most likely due to a long period of drought. There is an upper level in the “cave” area and the lower ground level. These ruins were named after the highest building on the upper level that was plastered white - similar to the building posted in “Canyon de Chelly IV”. Ladders would have connected the two levels and could have been pulled up in the event of an attack. There are pictographs and/or petroglyphs of the cliff walls between the lower and upper levels. The entire complex had an estimated 80 rooms but only half of them exist today, due to valley flooding over the years and damage from the elements. There are fences around most of the ruins today and you can see evidence of Navajo farming at the bottom of this photo. There is a small white farm house, off to the right, that didn’t make it through the cropping process. The cliff in this area is about 600 feet high. Some info from the National Park Service, Wikipedia and Navajo people I had talked to. Posting scanned from a 1996 photo. Thanks for stopping by, taking a peak and for all your previous comments. Dana

The rockface is so massive in size. There is so much to think about when looking at this. So much time to traverse to go from then until now and a the travels are fascinating. :-)
