Description
At this time of year, we often get large numbers of Blue Blubber Sea Jellies (Catostylus mosaicus) washed up on the beach. They are unfortunately at the mercy of the currents and the waves. Once beached, the hot sun then finishes them off very quickly. I hope it isn't too macabre, but I love their beautiful colours. They are non poisonous. I have literally photographed hundreds and hundreds of them over the years if people are interested!
Please zoom to better appreciate it's delicate beauty.

Once in a while, they wash up here too--i have a few shots of them and see the same beauty. They are amazing creatures.

Con la luce sono suggestive ! In acqua un po' meno perche' provocano bruciore sulla pelle. Ottimo scatto ! With the light are fascinating! In water a bit less because cause burning on the skin. Excellent shot!

Mario, I do not speak Italian, but I have handled these jellies in the water all my life with no effect. The Fisheries and Wildlife Dept. classify them as non poisonous, but say that they can cause some irritation in both a living and dead state in some individuals. But as I say, neither myself or my friends have ever experienced any effects. As I say I am talking about these particular jellies........Irukandji or Box Jellies to name but two can kill you very quickly.

I have known several people with sensitivity to them and I love them greatly, however, I do not handle them unless I have no choice. This is a stunning shot of one and the colorfulness they project in their own orbs.

I like this a lot. Luckily it isn't a box jellyfish. I like them but only because they have spring-loaded stingers that can remain effective even after they're dead, unless "radical necrosis" has degraded them sufficiently. I have to say that this is a prettier species however, and sad in that it's so subject to currents and the whims of the oceans. I suspect they're very human in that way--subject to whims and moods often not their own. The light is great as is the contrast of the alien blueness of the creature and the warm color of the sand. I'd love to see these alive. The only jellyfish I've seen were in Aquaria, or washed up on the beach in Saint Milo, France...but they just looked like transparent saucers for coffee cups.

Beautiful, but nature its ways!! A stunning creature floating in the sea for sure... beautiful even when dead... Fascinating shot. Rob..
