Description
This image is dedicated to Lior (lior). He is a good friend, and one of the kindest people I have ever known. The other day he told me his sister Rivka had died, and asked if I would do a dedication for her. Rivka was a wonderful sister, and was very close to their Father. Rivka admired her Father and dreamed one day she would marry a man like him. Sadly their Father died many years ago, and more recently they lost their Mom. Now that Rivka is gone the memories of their family being together are even more precious to Lior. I want to share with my friends one of those memories he will always treasure.
Memories Of My Family (For lior): While growing up their family didn't have a lot of money, but they did have love. Lior and Rivka loved their parents, and had a great life when they were young. Their parents spent time with their children, playing with them every day. Often they would go onto the porch and just spend the day laughing and talking. Rivka would always be close to her Father, and he would tell her stories. Lior was close to his Mom, enjoying the stories too. It may have seemed simple, but it was a magical world on that porch. You might see Rivka letting the family dog lick a cupcake, as their Mom laughed and rocked in her chair. This is my humble attempt to capture one of those moments he described. This is the image I had in my mind of this wonderful little family that Lior remembers when they were truly happy and I know many of you who have lost family members can relate and think back too I hope. My prayers are with you during this time of great loss my friend.

Another classic. Dave, you are the Norman Rockwell of the 3d art medium. I'm still waiting for you to do one for me though, back when I was just a tyke in college and used to help the sorrority girls string the house with Christmas light, only during all the frolicking and fun, the girls would all end up accidently tied to the house columns by the light strings and it would take me hours and hours to get those darn things unknotted. Hours! Oh, and add a translation for all my Samoan friends! Have a great Christmas!

Dave, it's embarrassing to have missed your gallery so long, though I've missed most galleries in the last months so you're not alone. But yours is always so special & touching, and i apologize for so much absence. Well, the last days of this year, I'm visiting everyone once to say Happy New Year and remind everyone how much you've all meant to me. I will comment on your other work, but I chose this one because it's such a loving tribute to Lior's passed sister, because it's so poignant, and because it's so much what you do, Dave. It's a true Dave gift to us all. First, I must say this touched something personal, as my mother's name in Hebrew was Rivka as well. (Rivka, or Rivchah, is the Hebrew for "Rebecca". You might hear it as "Rifkah" too---hard "f"---which is Yiddish.) I am very sorry for Lior's recent losses, his mother before & now his sister. (And his father, of course, years ago.) Losing a sister is like losing a piece of one's heart: There's nothing that can ever replace her, except for the burning flame of her memory and the glow of the love she left behind. Do you see the letters at the bottom of Lior's comment--in Hebrew? Well, in Rivka's case, they would stand for tehe nishmatah tzerurah bitzror hachayim, which means "may her soul be embraced in the bond of eternal life". It's based on First Samuel, from the Bible: It's a way of saying, may her soul live on like a flame in the light of the eternal. Your image helps keep that flame alive. Visually: You have all your loving details, Dave, which, from the little I know about rendering, take great care & love: The wholly naturalistic pose of each family member; the relaxed wrinkles of the clothing (it's so wonderful how you do that each time); the realistic wear of his mother's pants, the crossing of Lior's legs and the appearance of one foot and his wholly natural hands. The relaxed & extended legs of his mother; the all-encompassing lap of his father (wonderful); how Rivka embraces her father's hand with utter ease--another way you have of capturing love in the smallest moments. And you caught the dog as only dogs can be: resting one direction but craning over to get a piece of food, effortless (so it appears!) and done with the greatest affection. Rivka is all glee as she watches on, and you chose her colors so well: She's the sun here, all yellows. And your shading throughout the piece is very fine. And you've framed Lior's father & Rivka with the window, almost like a crown...and when we look in the background (on the left) we see the deep land behind, with trees & greenery going back into infinity. The silver balustrades framing it all so well. It's another gentle evocation from you, with attention to detail as if each one were a snapshot of our lives, a cornerstone of our memories. Beautiful as always Dave, and you are to be commended for doing this time after time, I mean without fail (!) given how much time it takes to first digest these stories, then how much you put into making them alive. You take them on as if an entire life were entrusted to you, and you finish them as if you were giving birth to them all over again. Which, really, you actually are... I once asked an old Jewish mystic if he thought souls went to an actual 'heaven'. He answered with the old mystical saying: "It is not our beloved who are in heaven, it is heaven that is in the beloved". You've captured that heaven once more for Lior and for us. My sympathies to Lior, and my bows to you. You are a servant to all you touch, Dave. Happy New Year, I hope all is well with you, I'll write to you soon. And I'll return to your glowing gallery soon after the 1st. Thank you for another piece of your big & always holding heart...
