Description
Welcome, and thank you for stopping in.
I am very much aware the ships combat history but have decided not to go into that other then saying that very few hold such a distinguished record. Her keel was first laid in 1942, it took 18 months to build at a price of $69 million. She was the eighth ship to bear the name. Length 856 feet, the width of the flight deck 120 feet, and a 27 foot draft. This Essex-class fleet carrier has a displacement of 27,000 tons and a mere 150,000 horsepower. She served in three wars and two Apollo missions.
The ship was converted into a floating museum in 1995 and now rests in San Francisco Bay at Alameda Point.
To all the men and women that serve. Your dedication, devotion, and supreme sacrifice do not go unnoticed, saying thank you never seems enough.
Thanks for the comments on my last post. It means so much!

They are amazing craft. I have been out on Pearl Harbor on smaller vessels and we have passed a few carriers at dock. They are like floating skyscrapers!

Wonderful shot of a magnificent ship. She's earned the honor of representing the thousands of brave men who sailed on her and served their country.

where I grew up at my mother's former home, the lot was 100 feet wide and 210' deep and I hated mowing the grass. just remembering it and associating with the size of the ship is mind boggling!excellent shot
