Description

Remember I told you I took some portraits at my brother's birthday party in November? The first was Michael who is not my sibling, btw, although he IS a brother by family of choice. My brother is Trent, and he'll be showing up later. Some of you had wondered about the lighting for these shots. The b&w of Michael was a flash photo and turned out to be a bit too highly colored. I tried it several ways, but b&w was most pleasing to my eye. Timmy, on the other hand, looked quite dramatic in the flash shots I took of him. I toned down the harsh shadows behind him, glammed him up a little in Photoshop, and here you have the result. I liked the pov on this portrait, since this is the way I always see Timmy. He's about a foot taller than me! There will be more later of various people ... Note to Chip: Yes, this is the same Timmy.

You have caught a great expression here, he looks as though he is going to enjoy this drink.

Title had me buffaloed until I opened things up. You do quite well at these parties...portrait-wise. I'm jealous:-) I've recently discovered that my camera (and probably yours) allows me/you to do all sorts of timing changes with the flash. Results are remarkably different from the "stark flash" we're all used to. I need to experiment (and find my owners manual which I've put in a "safe place"). Like what you've done with the background.

Good looking fellow and a lovely picture. While in photo shop you might tone down the orange behind Timmy's finger. I find it pulling my eye of his focus, the wine.

He looks like he's thinking of a pleasant memory or a private joke. Or maybe, as npauling says, it's just really good wine. Great portrait!

I'd be very happy this this shot Tara. It is a very sharp, crisp capture but is has an appealing softness to it. I'd rate it awesome. Dana

Excellent portrait, clear and sharp. He does seem to be engrossed with that wine. That is a nice hat.

Chip is looking over my shoulder and saying something in Czech, I have no idea what it is, but he told me to say "Dobree den" to Timmy, and something else that I can't spell, but it sounds like what Borat would say in his native language. I'll give the computer to Chip so he can comment later. This shot is great. There are some strange textures in Timmy's hat...like felt only more velvet? If that makes sense. I like the light. I love it that you can glam someone up in photoshop and get away with it! You do glam well.

Oooh, Tara, tell Timmy I said this to him: Dobry den, Jak se máte? It sounds a bit "Borat-ish" since Jak se mash is also the same greeting. In Czech if you spell it "máte" if its a little bit more formal. You can say this to him too: "My musit díl pivo a hovor kolem člen určitý blaho čas," which basically means something like "We should share beer and talk about the good old days." Of course I probably said something totally different, such as "Your turnips are on fire, but your horse is shopping for bangles." Who knows? Anyway, I love this shot and the glam you've applied. That's always a good thing. The whole vibe of the photograph is warm and tinged with just a wee bit of a kind of dream-fuzziness. It's more felt than seen and I have no idea how you got that effect but I love it.
