Description

This one started out with a matte painting commission that I did a while back and ended up not being used in the client's production. Multiple photo resources are used in the landscape and both photographic and Vue renders for the sky. Since I already had the base scene setup in Vue, I dropped in a Basilisk and then began building the formations of Epici low-poly soldiers, a few mechs and wheeled tanks. To save on resources I rendered out each group one at a time and and then moved them over for the next render, adjusting to show more movement of the troops and vehicles until getting to the two airborne Basilisk units. With all of these rendered out, I merged them together in Photoshop saving the shadows to a separate layer for easier blending over the original painting. The foreground is a separate Vue scene built using the original scene file to retain accurate camera position and lighting. The final piece was rendered to match the size of the matte painting which came in at just over 12,000px wide. Thanks for looking! :)

As always, JCD, fantastic work. My one comment would be: You are one heluva loadmaster to get that many troops, mechs, AND tanks into that Basilisk.

That is so cool! I have to remember your trick of multiple render passes on the objects, I have a bad tendency to overwhelm my poor computer. I like the wide sweeping view, and it's such an interesting contrast, the flowers and butterflies and all of those war machines.

Always love the big pictures. Great panorama for the Heavy Metal wrap-around. You just know its going to be bad news for Dejah Thoris and her colorful art nouveau world. Technically the only thing I wonder about is if the planet/crescents are pointing at the sun? You know better than I can tell. Gorgeous skies and everything else.

Thanks everyone for all the great feedback, I definitely appreciate it :) @Etrigan_102 - Yes, I definitely (re)imagined the inner hold of the Basilisk to be double-decker from front to back and utilize every square inch. Hey, that's the fiction part of sci-fi, right? ;) @deci6el - Definitely no shortage of artistic license on the near planet crests... I did tilt them slightly towards the sun, but my OCD just tends to like them more level than not :)

Wow! Great idea, brilliantly executed. And thanks for the excellent idea of multiple renders. I guess the neighbourhood can only go one way now....

Superb image, all the more so with the techniques you used. Agree with others; with the contrast of the desert background and lush colourful foreground, you know that a beautiful place and its inhabitants are about to be destroyed.
