Description

The Spanish Catholic Mission San Xavier del Bac is located about 10 miles south of downtown Tucson on the Tohono O'odham Indian Reservation. The mission was founded by Jesuit missionary Eusebio Francisco Kino in 1699. The original mission church was located about two miles distance from the current mission and was attacked and destroyed by Apache in about 1770. The present building was constructed under the direction of Franciscan Fathers Juan Bautista Velderrain and Juan Bautista Llorenz between 1783 and 1799 using mostly Indian larbor. The San Xavier church and its Indian converts were protected from Apache raids by the Presidio of Tucson which was established in 1775. One of the reasons I like the Southwest, i.e. Coastal California, Southern Arizona, New Mexico and Texas is the Spanish/Mexican cultural influence seen and felt through the architecture, customs and language. Ironically I don't speak Spanish but I like the Spanish names of the cities and communities, and in small communities especially the somewhat laid back life style.
