Description

Here you can see another bastion of the Venetian walls built in the early 16th century, after the siege of padova. They support part of the Arena gardens, and are bathed by the Bacchiglione river. I have many shots of this place, about 100 metres from my home, because although the water is foul, the view is beautiful. What's really amazing id that a lot of animals live here, surviving its severe pollution. The Bacchiglione (Latin Medoacus minor) is a river that flows through northern Italy. It rises in the Alps and empties into the Gulf of Venice, on the Adriatic Sea, near Chioggia. It flows past a number of towns, including Vicenza and Padova (Padua, and acted for many centuries as a significant waterway up to Vicenza, after which it ceases to be navigable. Recently, the Bacchiglione has gained a reputation for containing water dangerous to drink. Liberal use of animal fertilizer on thousands of acres of its watershed has caused relatively high levels of contamination. The Bacchiglione also washes through the urban and industrial areas of Vicenza and bringing additional pollution hazards. Thank you for your kind comments.

A very peaceful and beautiful scene. It is a tragedy about the river but somehow nature finds a way to survive. Here in America the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland, Ohio was once so polluted that in 1969 it caught fire. This helped to spur the Environmental Movement and in 1972 the Clean Water Act was passed. I hope things do not become that bad in Italy.

stellar image...but that can't be a winter sky... I know winter... should be snow and ice everywhere, people bundled up, anything of colour taken in and stored until spring... ;-) you have amazing winters.... but the pictures you take are even more amazing!

Very sad to think that the animals have to survive on water that is polluted. I agree with others here, that while they are surviving what happens to their future offspring. Thanks for the insight.. nice photo.

What a historic place you live in! Even New York harbor is clean compared to what it was 50 years ago...there's hope for the water...but it takes time and alot of money. Where have we heard that before?

sandra, I've been absent from here so long, I'm almost embarrassed to come back. But i've been absent almost everywhere in the last several months. And yesterday & today I'm stopping at one image per gallery so I can wish happy new year to everyone who's been so kind to me, and to let everyone know how much I appreciate their presence here.( I'll be back for more after the 1st, as my life is finally settling into some peace.) I've looked in your gallery many times, and I chose this because it's typical of what you do here. Part of it is how you reveal history in even the simplest shots, and moreso your awareness of it in every part of your life. Part of it is how you make the familiar---your home---so new & revealing to everyone else, because it is so to you. Part of it is the easeful way in which you unfold the background of a capture to us, telling us a tale as much as 'informing' us. And part of it is your natural sense of juxtaposition---here, a beautiful dreamy landscape mixed with the pollution that infiltrates it. From the human standpoint, we only hope (as bill says) that these waters will be cleaned. From the earth's standpoint, it's just another chemical that the "big rock" will adjust to. And our appreciation of this shot's beauty is as much from the second as the first (the overview afforded by seeing from a higher perspective). And inside it all is a sensitive image where the trees seem 'dreamt' on (you've achieved saturation in the leaves so that they feel like packets of light), and where the polluted water casts a beautiful metallic-green over the bottom of the shot. Your sky is a white light above it all. A scintillating picture & full narrative...I was going to pick the Gatta uploads or about 20 others, but I chose this for the way it remains simple despite the compelling story of its pollution. I'll be back sandra; but I've looked here almost every day, and you remain one of the unique centers on rosity. I wish you a wonderful New Year & hope you have many more in inspiration & great light! The wall here is a wall, but with age & decay it becomes a gentle vision. May your year be filled with them!
