Description

The red-crowned crane is the symbol for Longevity, luck and fidelity in East Asia. I think it is the most beautiful of all cranes, it's also very rare. According the the International Crane Foundation, there are only about 1,200 of these in the wild. Most of the population live in China with only about 900 birds living on Hokkaido in Northern Japan. These birds were created by Ken Gilliland as part of his Songbird Remix Shorebirds Volume 1 at Daz3d. I hope you like it. Thank you for the comments on my last picture "The Mooring". I sincerely appreciate it. Have a great week.

I'm in total agreement with Florin. This looks very much like an oil painting to me. The underwater foliage and the river bed is beautiful and active. I can see the waving of the plants and the moving of the shadows as the river flows on its way. The lighting is superb! I like the way the highlights are strongest around the two birds, focusing the attention on them and causing the background to recede as the eye moves to the right. I love the grey of the tree which causes it to become one with the clouds. The clouds also seem to recede in the distance. As does the water, which becomes lined with heavier shadows. Excellent composition, color and light!

Well Patty, this is just gorgeous, really steller. It reminded me of the story of Jo and Uba, a couple who lived to a very old age. After their deaths their spirits inhabited an old pine tree and on moonlit nights they returned to human form to clean the forest floor. They, like the crane, were known for their long life and fidelity and so are associated with cranes in a round about way. In Chinese tradition, old pine trees sometimes turn into cranes, since both are long-lived.

Gee Patty, this is really a wonderful image. Nice composition, color, lighting....but what really caught my eye is the beautiful way you have handled the birds against the texture of the grass. The added touch of working the feathers a bit... the transition between water and the bank, the stream bottom and the reflections....WOW. You should be very proud of this wonderful work!!! The comments of others about this looking like a painting is right on!!!
