Description

Most families farmed during these times. If you can find photographs of the land back in the 1800's you will see how the land was cleared all the way to the base of the cliffs, crops grew along the creek, cattle and sheep grazed on the hills. You'd see swinging bridges and grist mills all up and down the creek. Mail was delivered on horseback Here is a list of the cemetaries you can find and walk through in the park...Katy Blevins Cemetery, Hattie Blevins Cemetery, Terry Cemetery, Dirt Rockhouse Cemetery, Charit Creek Cemetery, Hatfield Cemetery, Owens Cemetery, Slaven Cemetery, Dewey-Phillips Cemetery, King Cemetery, Newt King Cemetery, Barr Cemetery, Waters Cemetery and there are quite a few that have no name at all. Walking through some of these cemeteries left me with an uncanny feeling of gloom because of the graves left standing, unamed, possibly even forgotten by now, the only thing there to show us that a person who lived is now buried there is a small broken, faded stone with no name. The Hattie Blevins Cemetery contains graves of families known as Blevins, Slaven, Burke and Crabtree. A lot of the graves in this cemetery are nothing more than rocks with little or no descriptions left to read on the tombstones. The cemetery along with other cemeteries in the park are not maintained by the park but instead by living family members. ZOOM IN FOR DETAIL

I am so enjoying this tour of the little cemeteries and the history. There are many small ones scattered in the country around here, too. Little family plots. We've never stopped, but I think now when spring comes around, I will ask my husband to stop at some of these little burial grounds.
