Description
This one is just opposite the Bacchiglione river's bank I posted previously. The bridge is a remnant of the old Roman bridge, re-built in the Middle Ages. Here there was the boundary of Roman Padua, a very rich and flourishing town. The bridge also connects the bank of the Navigable Internal Canal with the medieval Castle and the Main Branch of the river after the Venetians bridled and tamed its unruly course and its disastrous floods. The river is inhabited by a number of fish species, especially the catfish, that was imported to Europe in the 19th century from the Mississippi river, and prospered. Once fried catfish was a typical fish meal here in the old 'osterie' (inns) under the porches, but I don't think it's fished any longer because of the pollution, at least I was told that.
Thank you for your kind comments.

I am always amazed by the old Roman architecture...so durable and so useful. Poor old boats must stay right there as the tide rises and falls:) Good shot.

Excellent image! Beautiful clarity and composition. I wonder what the introduction of catfish did to the other river life, and then the pollution. This ecosystem has had to do a lot of adjusting over the years.

a beautiful capture, embracing all a river can be, with the beautiful old bridge and the muddy bank & old boats, and the house hidden at top (whose white is complemented by the white light at the bottom of the shot) and the beautiful way you've captured the curve and "spill" of the river into our laps, and the little piece of background behind the bridge. Intuitive & just right for a river's bend. And as always, your history is wonderful. It's always amazing for us to remember that cities were once fortresses and in various cases states; that they waged wars, took over other cities & areas, plundered, spread, protected, etc. In America, where cities grew up in flash fashion, we don't have that sense of history. Our melting pots had internal battles (probably for the same reasons old European cities battled external foes), but they rarely reached out into the country to battle anyone else. (Suburban sprawl wasn't so much the city taking over as just its inhabitants trying to stay close...) Just the right historical details for the shot, which is the case in all your uploads. Beautiful upload once again.
