Description

A view from Bergen op Zoom towards Zeeland (Zealand), one of the 7 Netherlands that formed the Republic in the 16th, 17th and 18th Century. Zeeland.. seen here in the distance, was NOT as powerful as Holland, but it was an important part of the Republic. The capital (Middelburg) was with Amsterdam an important VOC town. The VOC [UEC in English, United East Indish Compagny] founded in 1602 in my city, The Hague, was the first Multinational in the world. Zeeland gave it's name to New Zealand. Holland of course to Australia (New Holland) and the Republic gave it's name to the area around New Amsterdam !! (New Netherland / New York) Fun how a nation of only 2 milion people could be so influencual.... How many of those have been enjoying sunset's like this... It was a special one.. today.. with snow and ice !! The city of Bergen op Zoom ("mountains at the Zoom"(river)) is situated in North-Brabant. Now a days a province of the Monarchy (largest in size of all 12 provinces), but in the days of the Republic "Brabant" (and South Limburg) were colonies of the Republic.. Buffers against the Spanish forces in (now a days) Belgium [The Southern Netherlands]. Dutch-Limburg still has a colonial government today. Bergen op Zoom was a city, but most of all a militairy base.. The town is still full of left overs from more agressive days, years, centuries.. Hardly any tourists visit it.. but they should.. it is a great town.. with a fanastic view over the waters towards Zeeland.

I have to tell you that I really enjoy your history lessons. I've always wondered why Holland had two names .. the Netherlands and Holland, well now I know! It makes the pictures more interesting, too, knowing more about the areas in the photos. This is a beautiful sunset, but even with the sun still shining, it looks very cold!
