Description

Good evening, friends, hope you alived in winter. It is very cold here tonight, - 15° Celsius, brrrrr.... This wonderful little village scene is South Queensfery at the Firth of Forth, a very good place to take pics of the two Forth bridges, the old and the much newer highway bridge. As the name says: Once it was a ferry harbor with lots of passengers. This was before the Forth Bridge was built. The ferries crossed the Forth river and arrived at North Queensferry, which was a busy place too. We have seen only the south village. I was amazed by the fine painted houses, pubs and stores and the lots of flowerpots.... And the sun shined, the only day. At this place I will offer you again a good piece of Scottish music, the rockband "Capercaillie", what means in english "Wood Groose" or "Heather Cock". The heather cock is a very rare bird, in Scotland and in the rest of Europe, too, it is part of the "Red List" of very rare animals; the band name should remain at the gaelic language which is very rare today, too. Capercaillie was founded in the early 80ies in Oban, Argyll, at the Oban highschool by a circle of friends. Most important members of the band are the scottish galic lead singer KAREN MATHESON and her husband, DONALD SHAW, the piano-and accordionplayer. Both were born in Taynuilt, a very small village near Oban at the Loch Etive, and maybe, they played together as children, who knows? Capercaillie recorded their first CD in 1984, and more as a dozen followed till today. Karen Matheson recorded 4 CDs for her own and was -as her husband too - member of dozens of collaborations and sessions with collegues from all parts of Europe to Bretagne, Galicia and Marocco... KAREN MATHESON is the leading female gaelic voice of Scotland today; she is titled as the "Edith Piaf of Scotland", and Sir Sean Connery, her biggest fan, described her voice "as touched by the gods". DONALD SHAW is the most influencial musician of Scotland: Band leader of Capercaillie, keyborder, pianist, accordionplayer. He is the big organizer, a brilliant networker who has hundreds of contacts. He organizes every year the "Celtic Connection Festival" in Glasgow, Europes biggest music festival in wintertime... Capercaillie were pioneers of the scottish gaelic language revival which began in the early80ies, when the North Sea oil were eplored and many scotts began to dream about an own nation again. Capercaillie transformed the old gaelic work songs into modern rockmusic style arrangements and opened the old treasures to a young generation. They were pioneers of this movement. Karen Matheson is Member of the British Empire. The following gig was recorded 19992 live in Aberdeen, when the band was eight years old. They perform in english. Hope you enjoy this music. Having that walkway above the shop(?) entrances is very interesing! I can imagine people out tending the flowers and strolling about while the street below bustles with day travelers from the ferry. Thanks for sharing it.
