Description

Failte and hello again! This nice little village here is Inveraray, for centuries seat of the ancestors of the Dukes of Argyll, the mighty Campbell family. Main attraction here is Inveraray castle, seat of the Campbells till today. The castle is a gregorian mansion, a little chateau with a central tower and 4 round towers at he corners. To build this chateau, the old Inverary village, a collection of shabby cottages around the old castle, was teared down and totally rebuilt one mile away, because the 5th Duke of Argyll needed the place for his new house and the park. Its construction needed 40 years. Two famous architects and constructors built the new Inveraray as we can see it today: John Adam and the Edinburgh-born Robert Mylne in the tme from 1772 to 1800. John Adam constructed the Town House, the Argyll Hotel at the mainstreet and the harbour pier, a wooden mill and several estate houses, Robert Mylne constructed the church and the mostly parts of this little village. In these days the fishing of herrings was a great deal here and gave Inveraray working places and a little richness. On the pier at the left the iron sailing ship "The Arctic Penguin" is situated, it is a maritime museum today. Inverary is a nice little white clean village; it is one of the best examples for an 18th century new scottish town..... I am a little bit ashamed that we didn`t visit the Campbell chateau; I didn`t know about is existence in thee days of August 2009, sorry..... Today I want to present you another part of recent scottish music, a young lady who plays harp (or clarsach, as the gaels say). Let me introduce CATRIONA MacKAY, another member of the young scottish musician`s generation. The following clip "SWAN 243" was part of the "Transatlantic Sessions 3" BBC television series and was recorded in 2007. To listen to the music please CLICK HERE (copyright: bernardbriggs) Hope you enjoy the pic, the narratives and the music tune. Thanks for all, who commented for my last pic and a special big THANKS for all who took it as their favorite.... Have a nice day! bye, billcody
