Description

Happy New Year everyone. I hope you all rung in 2010 in fine fashion and are now all home safe and only mildly hungover. So sorry that I have to be brief today but I am rather busy this afternoon. But I thought that I would post this one photo featuring TTC CLRV streetcar 4000. A shot that caught me by surprise. Car 4000 is special because I believe it is the actual prototype CLRV streetcar. All TTC streetcars are numbered in the 4000 range - CLRVs numbered in the 4000 and 4100 range, ALRVs numbered in the 4200 range and the remaining two PCCs in the 4500s. But traditionally, the '0' number (like 4000) is not used in a series unless the vehicle is somehow singular. The prototype CLRV was delivered to the TTC in the mid 70's for testing about a year before the first large order of new streetcars to replace the quickly aging fleet of vintage PCCs streetcars. Have a great day!

Interesting. What were the circumstances of the shot? It looks like it's not in service, but it looks very clean and well maintained. Perhaps it was simply placed there, out of service? Perhaps it's an optical illusion and is actually making a turn? This is probably your own shot of the very same car "in a special paint scheme to celebrate Ontario's bicentennial in this 1984 shot. The car was one of six prototypes built by SIG in Switzerland before production on the remaining 190 moved to UTDC in Ontario. " http://transit.toronto.on.ca/streetcar/4503.shtml

What a wonderful shot. I remember the trams in Prague (tramvai, as they were called) and whenever I see such modes of transportation, I think of those antique bells dinging...even the modern "rocket trams" as I call them have those antique bells and super post-Star Trek sense of sleekness. I like this a lot because of the color and the details. Fantastic work.
