Description

Here is a view of the largest square in Italy and one of the largest in Europe, Prato della Valle, a 90,000 square meter elliptical square. The shot is taken from the small, green island at the center, Isola Memmia, surrounded by a small canal bordered by two rings of statues, mostly from the 18th century. In the background you can see the important benedictine St. Justina's Basilica, a martyr, whose 5th-century chapel was replaced by the 17th-century church. The remains of St. Luke the Evangelist were brought to Padua, Italy, sometime before 1177, according to tradition, and buried in St. Justina's. Near the church you can see the bonfire to burn the 'old year' on January 6th. More about it in the next post. Thank you for your kind comments.
