Description

Here is a view of the largest square in Italy and one of the largest in Europe, Prato della Valle, a 90,000 square meter elliptical square. The shot is taken from the small, green island at the center, Isola Memmia, surrounded by a small canal bordered by two rings of statues, mostly from the 18th century. In the background you can see the important benedictine St. Justina's Basilica, a martyr, whose 5th-century chapel was replaced by the 17th-century church. The remains of St. Luke the Evangelist were brought to Padua, Italy, sometime before 1177, according to tradition, and buried in St. Justina's. Near the church you can see the bonfire to burn the 'old year' on January 6th. More about it in the next post. Thank you for your kind comments.

Beautiful image and very interesting information. I like the composition, with the lovely church in the background and grouping of the tree, lamp and stonework in the front. I'm looking forward to the celebratory burning of the old year!

as always, it's wonderful that you usher in all occasions with pictures of the rites we do for them. I had never heard of the bonfire that burns the old year & I'm curious what your next upload will be! And it's also typical of your gallery to show us places, artifacts, etc, that commemorate passed souls, battles, conflicts--which have become objects of beauty and celebration in time. The photo has a dreamy quality, the remaining leaves/buds dominate everything & give a dreamy 'grain' to the shot. And the pinkish light & hues make it feel like a late winter day when everything dissolves into a peaceful dreamy vision. And the legend that Luke was buried here would (I imagine) bring pilgrimages to this place. A quiet & uplifting image for the new year, and you've lined up the lamp pole & tree, waste basket, bench, etc, in a very nice musical way.
