Description

The Holiday/Birthday mayhem having passed I thought it time to continue on the Coyote Butte Wilderness trek. It's hard to appreciate the scope of this amphitheater. For those that missed the earlier post describing the dimensions here they are. Approximate diameter is 110 feet, the amphitheater walls are about 50 feet tall and the sand dune is bigger than it looks an estimated 25 feet tall. The sandstone of the north half of the formation is radically different than the south half, our POV being north in this image. Will be posting a few close ups of the sandstone wall from the other side of the sand dune for comparison with the slick rock composing the south side of the amphitheater. This is such a breathtaking view. Sweeping rock and contrasting sun and shade. It has me feeling cool and protected as I gaze at sun beating down on the hot rock.
