Published writer, neophyte artist, and always learning.
After working with Poser for the last 5 years, I've switched to Carrara. Even though I've had it for about 3 builds, the UI was too unfriendly and non-intuitive for me, until Poser 8 went whacky for me on my system. So I jumped in, read the forums and began to get back into deep learning mode.
Just scratching the surface, but having fun and trying new things. Lots of possibilities.

Too bad it didn't place, it's good! I particularly like the passed-out toddler.

you have an incredibly distinctive style. i remember realizing this one was yours. it's a great scene, with interesting characters. that eldest boy is interestingly composed and introspective. the composition is very well done, and leads your eye from figure to figure. i know the only thing that kept me from voting for it was the lighting. it blows out in places and is too dark in others. i think it could work in that extreme, but then it should be consistent. for instance, the rug shows details and muted colors, but the tree and its tinsel streamers are simple and harshly constrasting. they're the highest contrast and most eye-catching, though you don't seem to want them to be the most important aspect of the image. please don't be discouraged in any way by my critique. you're in my favorite artists because i greatly admire your work and want to learn from it. i love details like the wreath and music stand. and i really appreciate how you played with the theme. it's a very typical family Christmas, one like so many of one's youth, but so sublime in its simple joy that it becomes one of those memories you keep with you all your life. the land outside the room looks appropriately vague, and almost depth blurred. the Zuni doll from Trilogy of Terror is an interesting touch.

cobatdream -- thanks for the critique. I actually like that. And, you are correct about the lighting. First, I didn't intend to enter it into the contest, it was just my Christmas card for this year to family and friends. But I liked it, so entered it. The scene was problematic to render, and I had to go back and correct reference files and even split the scene. The background with tree and presents took over 24 hours to render alone. But then I "killed" it it postwork. Tried to go for a dreamy, colorful, nostalgic look, but as you pointed out, the contrast became harsh. I tried to adjust it several times, and even between the contest and posting it here, but it's still... off. And thank you for favoriting me.

A wonderful Xmas scene, though I'm no fan of the holiday. You got my vote in the contest.
