Description

This is a piece of ancient ice that broke off of Mendenhall glacier, then floated across the lake at it's base and washed up in the shallows on the other side. Because the ice is so compressed from millenia of extreme pressure, it is melting slowly, with fresh ice forming and melting on the lake's surface around it. The lake itself is full of glacial loess, a super-fine silt the consistency of flour which has created some of the most fertile soils in the world, and gives the lake a slate-gray color.

Amazing capture and information. I have always been curious about glacial ice, as I've never seen it. Oh, I've seen what it has done over the millenia, but I have yet to see any of it live and in person. I'd love to. This is graceful, elegant, and amazing! Wonderful work!
