Description
King Albert I of Belgium used to dress up as a soldier and sit stately on horseback while Flemish recruits, ordered forward by French-speaking officers, perished in the Great War behind the River IJzer (Dutch for "Yser") in Flanders Fields fighting the Jerries.
He was a model to them all. His statue can be seen in what we call South Park (no kidding) in the center of Ghent. If you want to go to this park, take a tram or bus to Woodrow Wilson Square. Don't get off too early, or you'll have to walk all the way down President Theodore Roosevelt Avenue.
