Description
This angel stands on a gate post together with his twin at the entrance of a graveyard in a small New Brunswick town, Canada. When I saw it the sky was something to remember. It was noon and it reminded me of some medieval stories about the Last Judgment. So I think it's a good image for what has happened in Haiti.
This country has been plagued not only by a violent tropical Nature, but, and mostly, by a history littered by a bad ruling class, perfidious dictators and 'presidents' exploiting religion and death squads with exotic names. It is this conflation which has transformed a natural event into a huge catastrophe. The title comes from an array of different Biblical sources; since I'm a non-believer, far from me to start a theological controversy.I cannot help remarking, however, that among the curses plaguing Haitians, there's Hollywood, which turned an extatic religion, voodoo, into a ridicule horror caricature. And that TV preacher who spoke of a deal with the devil shouldn't watch too many B-movies!
In English-speaking culture, the image of Gabriel as the angel that shall blow the trumpet blast that initiates the end of time and the general resurrection at the Last Judgment, which has no source in the Hebrew Bible or the New Testament,is a familiar trope. This might be influenced by the Norse sagas about the Gjallarhorn, alerting the Aesir to the onset of Ragnarok. Its first appearance in English is in John Milton's Paradise Lost (1667), and can be found among others, in African-American spirituals. In a play based on spirituals, The Green Pastures (1930), Gabriel has his beloved trumpet constantly with him. 'Blow, Gabriel, Blow' was introduced in Cole Porter's Anything Goes (1934). The mathematical figure given the modern name 'Gabriel's Horn', was invented by Evangelista Torricelli (1608-1647).
