Description

This is one of thousands of smaller waterfalls cascading from the mountains above Juneau. In many places, a falls like this would be named, but here, I'm not even sure if the creek is named. We live in a rain forest here, and are gifted with abundant amounts of Earth's most precious gift ... water. I've been experimenting with long-exposure shots of flowing water around ice, and have found that having snow or ice present in the shot makes the capture very challenging. The snow or ice, by virtue of it's reflectivity and contrast with it's surroundings, tends to have all it's details washed out in the final product. In the end, the shot turns out to be a flowing water shot surrounded by white blobs. This is particularly true when the water and ice are present on black rock with little or no vegetation around. This shot was achieved in post-processing, by using the color curve rather than brightness/contrast to tone down the ice, and yet brighten the dark rock underneath in order to bring out some details of both.
