Description

Taken at North Berwick at 7th August 2009 at the old fishery harbour. Thanks for your interest! Friends, I am working at the last pics of this series in the moment- and nothing works! They should be something special: maybe sentimental, maybe humourous with an eye´s twinkle, maybe spectacular... and it is like at the beginning here. I could get a nervous breakdown.... It´s common meanwhile here for me to search a music clip from the scottish tradition music scene for you, so I do today. I will present you the art of PUIRT A BEUL, an old irish or scottish music tradition. I don`t know something about its origin. PUIRT A BEUL is scottish gaelic and means "MUSIC WITH THE MOUTH" or "Mouth Music". What is that? Puirt a beul in its classic tradition is only pure singing without an instrument; only somebody must give the rhythm, maybe with a stick, an animal´s bone; with spoons or a small hand drum, the bhodrum. The singer has to sing very quickly, the mouth must be shatter the gaelic words as a machine gun.... And that it is: Who is the most quickliest singer in town? It does no matter what they are singing; the refrains can be very simple - only the speed counts. This is a sort of "Gaelic rap" (LOL) Today every great native gaelic singer in Scotland trains to sing PUIRT A BEUL - sets; Karen Matheson, Julie Fowlis for example (Julie Fowlis is an excellent mouth scatterer...LOL) I dug out a relatively oldfashioned PUIRT A BEUL set, recorded 2005 in Scotland for the TV program "Highland Sessions". Singers are MARY ANN KENNEDY, the well known ex-BBC Television News lady, who run recently with her husband her own music studio near Fort William, and the young male Scots Trad Award winner JAMES GRAHAM, the only male scottish gaelic singer who won an award..... I hope you enjoy there mouth battle.... LISTEN HERE Comments are always welcome, thanks for your interest and your time you are spending here! And now its time for your pics....

That look like a Stirling place to spend the day. No offense but I really didn't like the music.

Excellent picture, we stayed at Musselburgh a couple of years ago and explored all along that coast, some beautiful scenery all around there.

Wonderful picture and a great music presentation Wolfgang. I can see what you mean about singing fast, they almost sound like auctioneers. I liked the instruments, they sound similar to what I have heard in Ireland. Strange and haunting. Excellent presentation!!
