Description
I visited the town of Abingdon Virginia, this last fall, and this Mill is among it many charms. A few of the places of interest that I love about this town, are in this order the Creeper Bike Trail which is a 35 mile bike trail, when we did the ride, they place your bikes in these specially built vans, then shuttle you up the mountain, then they basically drop you off at the top of the mountain, where there is an old railroad station, which is now a visitor center, and from there you experience riding over old bridges and trestles, seeing historic railroad buildings, listen to banjo music from a nearby music hall, and mostly just enjoying the natural beauty of this amazing state, there are also little coffeehouses, and cafes along the route, we went in the spring and it is definitely on my list of things to do again. Then I would have to say the Barter Theatre which was built in the 30's when we were there we saw The Sound of Music and it was wonderful, the third thing I would say about this town, is just the people there and the charm of town that feels like you've stepped back in time. I hope you enjoy this photo of the mill and the history below. Oh one more thing the town is decorated with wolf statues, they are everywhere similar to, the Flying Pigs of Cincinnati, the Black Bears in Knoxville Tennessee, and the former Cows on Parade in Chicago, and their theme is "Who's afraid of Virginia's Wolves" there are 27 of them placed throughout the town and they are so cute.
History:
White's Mill has long served the neighboring community. Since the late 18th century, the mill provided meal and flour for the farm and kitchen, as well as a gathering place for sharing news and views. The Mercantile, formerly the Cumbow Store, provided those store-bought essentials and extras that any home needs.
When White's Mill began milling grain with its overshot wheel, waterpower provided the only stable mechanized energy. Over the years, improvements in technology were added, progressing with the times to provide for local needs. Visitors to the mill can see the old equipment, as well as contemporary upgrades.
The Virginia and National Registries of Historic Places listed White's Mill in 1974, recognizing the importance of its structure and heritage. White's Mill continued water-powered milling until 1989. The decade at the end of the twentieth century saw it out of service until the White's Mill Foundation formed and purchased the property in 2001. Now, along with work on renovating the mill, the White's Mill Foundation hosts various community events, including the annual Harvest Days in October, when one can enjoy music, fishing and food along the old millstream.

Nice picture of Whites Mill. I remember when the old water trace was in use and the mill ran off the water that was supplied. You can tell I am no young chicken. The wolves in Abingdon are from a time in the past when Daniel Boone was visiting and his dogs found a den of wolves in the cave behind the Cave House located on East Main Street. The cave house also was where the actors of the Barter stayed when in town. Now the Cave house is where local artist display and sell their products. An excerpt I found refering to the wolves: The Cave House, located on Main Street, was named after the caves which underly the property. Legend has it that in 1760 when Daniel Boone camped near this site, his hunting dogs were attacked by wolves from the caves. So, the settlement was known as Wolf Hills

What wonderful nostalgia, Lynell! 70 years ago I was growing up in Mainville, PA and at the end of the road by our house was a working mill and across the street from our house was an old wooden bridge over the Susquehanna river. I was only 5 when we moved from there but I remember these and my uncle pulling me in my wagon across the wooden bridge. Thanks for the memories!

Deep and intensive research evident into the history of this old timer and surrounding area, Lynell. Everything looks so Civil War era. Just more grist for your mill visits and fotos. Terrific POV, contrast and textures in this snap. An ideal spot to drive the BOSS HOGG. And was "The Sound of Music" the movie or a play put on by the locals? I like the clever spinoff from "Who's afraid of Virginia Woolf."
