Description

It is the third day of my delay in London and I decided to go and see the Tower Bridge and the Tower, the limit of my zone 1 underground ticket. This is a partial view of the Tower of London, generally referred to as the 'Tower'. It is raining and everything appears grey and dreary. The construction of the Tower of London was initiated by William the Conqueror in 1070 A.D. shortly after his victory at Hastings in 1066 A.D. The Tower was built to enforce the power of the kings over the newly conquered region and the fortress was originally not more than a temporary wooden building which was replaced later by the White Tower completed in 1097 A.D. (not visible). The Tower was used to imprison, torture and kill the many political opponents of the kings. It also served as a royal residence for several kings during turbulent times. Today the Tower is best known for its Crown Jewels. This picture was taken on 21 December 2009. Thank you for viewing, commenting, and favs, Sig....

Nice capture. Its odd for me to see a picture of a castle with modern drainpipes and what not. I am sure it is common in places where there are lots of castles still in use (not many in Louisiana LOL). I see the catapult and got a chuckle as I thought to myself the "unwanted tourist eviction device." :O)

yeah but not as greay and dreary as if you would be sitting inside locked up and looking out. i always felt with the characters in the books when they where in the tower as in many many stories around the world where the tower plays a big role.

The TOL is one of my all time favorite places! Great shot. It's funny how a place of torture and death can be so much fun to explore, especially when you are not the one getting tortured to death!

The only time to explore this is on a really bad weather day.. As its the No.1 Tourist attraction next to the Wheel Thing! So, you hit a good time with your bad luck.... The Science Museum, Imperial War Museum, Natural History Museum are all within Zone 1..... And SO many other things... You did good! Rob

Cool shot. When we were over there in 2004 we went to see that and Henry the Eigth's funny armor inside.

well actually, rainy dreary days can be the best ones to capture buildings like these as the water richens the colours of them beautifully, oh and keeps the crowds away as well :).
